Tweed New Haven Airport Reopens After Heavy Rain Led to Avelo Flight Cancellations

July 18, 2023

Jul. 17—NEW HAVEN — Tweed New Haven Airport reopened Monday after heavy rains caused flooding Sunday that led to the cancellation of 15 inbound and outbound flights, according to a spokesman for Avelo Airlines.

In addition to 15 canceled flights, Avelo Airlines spokesman Jim Olson said two inbound flights were diverted to Bradley International Airport before completing their routes to Tweed. Olson said the terminal also was temporarily closed Sunday due to the rain.

"Customers on the canceled flights were notified ahead of time and given the option to rebook their trip within 7 days at no extra cost or receive a full refund," Olson said in an emailed statement.

Olson said that, as of Monday, the airport had been reopened and all Avelo flights departed on time.

In a statement, Tweed New Haven Airport Authority Executive Director Tom Rafter said the airport collects floodwaters "to protect our neighbors."

"The airport reopened this morning, with TSA operating as normal. No permanent damage is expected and we still have fans and dehumidifiers running, but the bulk of the cleanup work was completed Sunday night," Rafter said Monday. "The airport acts as a collection bowl for the surrounding community."

Rafter said the expansion plans for Tweed include plans for stormwater.

"When the airport terminal is moved, its design will include new mitigation measures and allow for additional onsite water containment during storms," Rafter said in the statement. "To protect the new terminal, it will sit on stilts to allow water to collect underneath without becoming disruptive inside the terminal. A new terminal means a better HVN for passengers and neighbors."
