Huntsville Airport Gets Permit for $13.3 Million Terminal Project
A permit was issued in the last couple of weeks for a $13.3 million terminal project at Huntsville International Airport.
The Robins & Morton Group of Homewood is the contractor for the project. The total cost of the terminal renovation is expected to be around $25 million, Airport CEO Butch Roberts said in an interview last fall with the Lede.
It was the most expensive project in the last two weeks in Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties, according to Southern Exposure Information. Overall, 219 permits were issued for projects topping $74 million.
Huntsville issued 83 for projects totaling $41.1 million. Madison County issued 77 for $16 million, Madison 37 for $11 million, Decatur 13 for $3.2 million, Athens seven for $2.2 million and Priceville two for $62,000.
Seven commercial projects exceeded $1 million from June 20 to July 3.
Plans for work on the airport terminal and concourse has been in the works since before the COVID-19 pandemic, with architects designing the project. The airport was awarded $10 million from the $1 billion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminal Program for the project.
The airport is also putting its own money toward the work.
The airport plans to add more escalators and elevators as well as family restrooms, lactation rooms and a service animal relief area.
Retired Airport CEO Rick Tucker said escalators in the terminal building are “1967 vintage.”
Roberts said the enhancements will also improve energy efficiency and achieve Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA) compliance for individuals with access and functional needs,
He also said more space would be added for concessions.
The project is expected to take more than a year to complete.
