$1.5 Million for Toilet Paper? DFW Airport Leaders Say Nothing Stinks About the Deal
Feb. 5--DFW AIRPORT -- When DFW Airport's board members learned this week that they were being asked to spend $1.5 million on toilet paper during the next year, they wrinkled their noses.
"Are you kidding me?" airport board chairman Bill Meadows of Fort Worth said afterward, recounting the reaction of his colleagues when the price tag for the toilet tissue came up during a committee meeting.
But DFW staff members wiped away board members' concerns.
They explained that the airport's customer service department had "performed research" on restrooms in the airport's five passenger terminals, and determined a toilet paper upgrade was urgently needed.
One of the key complaints seems to be that the old supplier provided household size rolls, which ran out too quickly, leaving some stalls ill-prepared for their visitors.
The airport board is expected to formally approve a contract of up to five years with the new vendor during a meeting Thursday. Torrez Paper Company of Farmers Branch is expected to be paid $3,017,449 for the first two years of the contract -- with the option of three one-year renewals at the same $1.5 million annual price.
It may seem -- um -- wasteful to spend that much money on toilet paper, but DFW Airport now brings in about 75 million travelers per year.
So the $1.5 million toilet tissue tab works out to about 2 cents for every set of buns that passes through DFW's doors.
