Drone Sighted at Berlin's Tegel Airport; No Delays for Passengers

Oct. 8, 2019

Berlin (dpa) - A drone spotted at Berlin's Tegel Airport caused a few minutes of disruption for air traffic on Monday, leaving passengers unaffected, said the German air traffic control authority spokesman

A pilot spotted the drone on the edge of city, said the spokesman, prompting a short pause in traffic. No other sightings were reported.

It was unknown whether the drone was tied to climate protests being held by Extinction Rebellion in the German capital. The activists had occupied several major transport hubs in European cities to bring awareness to climate change. It was unclear whether the airports in Berlin were supposed to be targeted in the protest action.

Drone sightings have disrupted operations at several European airports recently.

In May, nearly 150 flights were affected in Frankfurt when a drone was spotted near the southern end of the airport.

Last month, climate change protesters in London who had planned to disrupt flights at Heathrow Airport with drones were arrested by police. Drone sightings at Heathrow and Gatwick airports since last year have led to hundreds of delayed and cancelled flights.
