Man Who Shot Himself In Struggle With Officer at PDX to Appear In Court

Oct. 1, 2019

A man who apparently shot himself inadvertently while struggling with a police officer over a gun at the Portland International Airport baggage claim is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Deshawn Seamster, 31, was arrested and booked into jail Friday. He’s accused of several charges, including unlawful use of a weapon and assaulting a public safety officer, records show.

The officer involved in the struggle suffered apparent minor injuries and never fired a weapon. The handgun belonged to Seamster.

Port of Portland Police Chief Jason Wallis said the officer approached the man, since identified as Seamster, in the baggage claim area early Friday. Seamster pulled out the gun, Wallis said, and the two fought over control of it.

Wallis on Friday declined to reveal more information about the incident, such as why the officer approached the man. The officer hasn’t been publicly identified.

Seamster is being held in the Multnomah County Detention Center. He’s scheduled to appear in Multnomah County Circuit Court about 2 p.m.
