Some local leaders in the Meadowlands — a region already prone to flooding — are sounding the alarm as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers considers a plan to fill in 11 acres of wetlands at Teterboro Airport.
Towns surrounding Teterboro — Moonachie and Little Ferry especially — suffered immense damage during Superstorm Sandy when the storm surge breached levees along the Hackensack River. But many of the towns around the Meadowlands deal with more routine floods from smaller storms.
"We have trouble now with water runoff and draining," Hasbrouck Heights Mayor Jack DeLorenzo said. "Paving over that many acres — where will all the water be absorbed?"
