Sunshine Cleaning Systems has been recommended by Broward County purchasing for award of a new three-year $64 million contract to provide janitorial services to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Terminals 1 – 4. The contract allows for two one-year extensions, with an amount not to exceed $86 million.  Sunshine, which participated in a competitive bid selection process, has been serving the airport since 1986.

“We are honored and proud to be able to continue to serve the airport and the passengers who use it every day,” said President and CEO Laura Coenen, who emphasizes that 35 percent of the contract will be dedicated to five Broward County firms certified by the Office of Economic and Small Business Development.

“Our staff members have been working extraordinarily hard these past few months during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure all airport employees and travelers remain safe,” she said, noting that operations management at Sunshine have completed training through the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) for prevention and control of infectious disease outbreaks with an emphasis on SARS-CoV-2/COVID 19.

Similar to the LEED certification, which has become the gold standard for green buildings, the GBAC STAR™ Accreditation program is now the seal of approval for facilities following strict cleaning and disinfection procedures for handling infectious disease outbreaks.  Created by the worldwide cleaning industry association (ISSA), the program offers training to cleaning professionals as well as an accreditation for facilities.

Extra cleaning protocols currently underway at the airport, according to Coenen, include continuous disinfecting of high touch point areas throughout the airport, more frequent cleaning of restrooms, and concentrated deep cleaning and disinfecting throughout the facility.

Among Sunshine Cleaning System’s additional Florida clients are: the Cities of Delray Beach, Pompano Beach, Tamarac and West Palm Beach; Manatee County; the Broward County main library and government center in downtown Fort Lauderdale; as well as numerous private and public schools and universities, restaurants, retailers, offices and athletic facilities.
