The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners today approved construction of a new American Express Centurion? Lounge at Miami International Airport, which will provide a unique travel experience for American Express Card Members moving through the airport.

“The new Centurion Lounge will be a welcome addition at MIA, both as a passenger amenity and as an employer of local residents,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “We look forward to the world-class service that American Express is bringing to our global gateway.”

American Express and Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) officials started meeting last year to discuss opening a lounge at MIA, ultimately settling on an 8,000 square foot space near Gate D-12 in the North Terminal. The Centurion Lounge at MIA will feature locally-inspired cuisine and cocktails from award-winning talent, a spa with complimentary treatments and a family room. Additionally, Card Members will enjoy access to high-speed Wi-Fi, personal computers and noise-buffering workspaces.

Barring unforeseen construction circumstances, American Express is aiming to open The Centurion Lounge in MIA’s North Terminal later this year. American Express operates a network of domestic Centurion Lounges with locations in Dallas and Las Vegas, and new locations slated to open this year in New York’s LaGuardia Airport and San Francisco.

“I’m grateful to Mayor Gimenez and the Board of County Commissioners for supporting this win-win deal for Miami International Airport and our customers,” said MDAD Director Emilio T. González. “American Express is a world-class business partner and we’re excited about their new Centurion Lounge at MIA. It will take customer service to an entirely new level and help separate our airport from the rest in this highly competitive business.”
