Kansas City International Airport Reports April Passenger Traffic

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that 42,190 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International Airport’s gates in April, a 95.5 percent decrease from April 2019. Passenger boardings were down 95.5 percent, with a total of 21,036 boarded. For the year to date, total passengers in and out total 2,139,114, down 40.3 percent. Year-to-date passenger boardings are 1,058,996, down 40.8 percent. 

“On behalf of everyone at the Kansas City Aviation Department, especially our front line workers, I’d like to thank everyone who chose to postpone their discretionary travel in April to help flatten the curve and slow the spread of the coronavirus,” said Pat Klein, director of aviation. “As the stay-at-home orders are lifted and travelers return, we will continue to do everything possible to provide a clean and safe gateway to the world.”

Air cargo tonnages for all carriers, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, were down 13.4 percent in April with a total of 15.7 million pounds handled. Year to date, 64.5 million pounds have been handled, down 5.8 percent. Air freight handled at KCI during April amounted to 15.7 million pounds, down 10.5 percent year-over-year. Year to date, air freight is down 4.9 percent with a total of 63.0 million pounds handled. Air mail for April was down 97.2 percent from April 2019 with 17,367 pounds handled. Air mail year to date for 2020 is down 31.5 percent from 2019 with 1.6 million pounds handled.

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for April 2020 was 134. Service was offered to 43 nonstop markets. There was an average of 24,747 arriving and departing scheduled seats in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 5 daily departures for April.
