An F-4C Phantom II made its way along U.S. Highway 70 on Monday morning on to its final destination at Alamogordo White sands Airport.

The plane will eventually be a static display at the airport once it is repainted. It was previously housed at Holloman Air Force Base.

The trip required a police escort and a lineman lifting up the power lines to let the plane under the line.

The plane was towed by an Alamogordo Fire Department truck.

The F-4C was first flown in May 1958 and was originally made for the U.S. Navy.

An Air Force version was first flown in 1963.

Production of the plane ceased in 1979, according to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

The plane took its final flight in December 2016.

A battle ready plane

The F-4C had an armament of up to 16,000 pounds of externally carried ordnance.

It was powered by two General Electric J-79-GE-15s engines with 17,000 pounds thrust each that helped the plan reach a maximum speed of 1,400 miles per hour.

The plane spanned 38 feet and was 58 feet in length, weighing over 58,000 pounds.

The F-4 had a range of 1,750 miles and could reach a ceiling of 59,600 feet.
