Just one month after an all-time record-breaking May at Akron-Canton Airport (CAK), June overcame May as the airport's busiest month ever, the airport's management said. The airline serves Northeast Ohio region with service from Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) and US Airways, among other carriers.

Marking a 65-year monthly passenger record, 168,935 customers traveled to/from CAK in June, beating May by 10,000 passengers. Compared to June of last year, the airport hosted 17,820 more passengers in 2012 for a 12 percent increase.

For the first six months of the year, 874,270 travelers flew to/from CAK, up 12 percent compared with the first six months of 2011.

June 2012 also marks the 15th consecutive month of record-breaking passenger traffic. Plus, CAK was ranked as the 11th most affordable airport in the U.S. and the top in the state of Ohio, according to a June 2012 study from CheapFlights.com for the third consecutive year.

AirTran Airways (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines) offering nonstop service to Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, New York, Boston, Milwaukee and Denver increased 27 percent compared to June 2011 carrying 89,717 total passengers.

Frontier Airlines flying nonstop to Denver was up 13 percent compared to last year. US Airways, with flights to Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. (Reagan), increased by 11 percent.

United with flights to Chicago O'Hare, increased by 5 percent. Further, beginning August 12, 2012, Southwest Airlines will begin two daily nonstop trips to Chicago Midway along with replacing AirTran's nonstop flight to Denver. S
