Trade Union May Call Easter Strike Over Austrian Airlines Pay Offer

Crew meetings already led to the cancellation of more than 100 flights on Tuesday.

Vienna — The trade union representing Austrian Airlines employees may call a strike over the upcoming Easter holidays if negotiations over a pay rise fail.

Staff representatives are threatening a strike at Easter if the airline's management fails to improve the current pay offer by Thursday, April 6, Vida union representative Daniel Liebhart told dpa on Tuesday.

Otherwise, there could be a strike from Good Friday, or April 7.

He said the call came after a works meeting of on-board crew that lasted several hours.

Crew meetings already led to the cancellation of more than 100 flights on Tuesday.

The management of Austrian Airlines had recently proposed an average salary increase of 12.3% to pilots and flight attendants.

However, employee representatives said in reality the offer was only 8.5%, so below the inflation rate, Liebhart said.
