Zurich — The Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss Air Lines plans to be the first airline in the world to use solar fuel.

Swiss and Lufthansa have started a strategic cooperation for the market launch with the manufacturer Synhelion, the airline announced on Tuesday.

The new process uses concentrated sunlight to produce CO2-neutral fuel. The first plant for industrial production is to be built this year in Jülich, in Germany's North Rhine Westphalia state, and Swiss is to become the first customer in 2023.

Synhelion was founded by researchers at the Swiss university ETH in Zurich. Solar fuel is an economical and resource-saving substitute for fossil fuels, said co-founder Philipp Furler.
