Alitalia Asks Passengers to Wear Face Masks Against Coronavirus

March 16, 2020

Rome (dpa) - Italian airline Alitalia says it will ask passengers to wear face masks on busy flights in which they cannot be safely kept far apart.

The measure, effective immediately, applies "if a large number of travellers on board doesn't allow to respect the 1-meter interpersonal safety distance," a company statement says.

Passengers found without a mask could be denied boarding, Alitalia warns. The airline also advises travellers to wear them "at airports, and during boarding and disembarking from aircraft."

Many countries and airlines have restricted air travel to Italy, and Alitalia itself has reduced its services given a sharp fall in demand.
