American Airlines Celebrates New Gates and a Milestone at CLT Amid Construction
American Airlines celebrated the grand opening of four more gates in Concourse A at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Tuesday morning.
The new gates put American at just more than 700 daily flights out of the Charlotte airport — that’s out of nearly 800 total flights out of CLT daily, Charlotte Aviation Director Brent Cagle said.
“American Airlines operates off of every concourse now at CLT,” Cagle said. “But what it really means is that the region’s growing, passenger traffic is growing and that’s good for all of us.”
The four new gates first started operating Dec. 18, American spokeswoman Crystal Byrd said.
The added gates mark American’s expansion to 149 destinations in 25 countries from Charlotte, said Dec Lee, American Airlines CLT hub operations vice president.
American Airlines has more than 12,100 Charlotte-based employees.
“We’ve proudly served Charlotte and the region for many decades,” Lee said. “And we’re really grateful to be a catalyst for the region’s continued growth.”
CLT concourse expansion
Cagle said the airport’s own expansion gives American Airlines more room to increase the number of flights out of the city. The airport will kick off the Concourse A Expansion Phase 2 this year, he said.
Phase 2 is a $205 million project that is expected to be completed in 2022, according to the airport. The expansion will add another 10 gates to Concourse A.
The airport’s many construction projects, including a $600 million terminal lobby expansion, are part of the airport’s $2.5 billion to $3.1 billion “Destination CLT” renovation program.
