Li-ion Batteries Risk Reassessed

Aug. 8, 2018

Aviation Week & Space Technology has a new article on lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries on airlines, written by Bill Carey.

Simply put, Li-ion battery risk is being reassessed. They now say that a laptop thus powered could—with other baggage items like pressurized aerosol cans-—start a fire.

I was delighted to learn that these batteries are still scrutinized. This is a risk that needs to be eliminated, one way or another. I don’t know the answers, but do know that I’ll feel much safer if they solve the problems.

Perhaps the solution will be—as I mentioned in a previous blog—newer and safer batteries. As electro-powered vehicles advance, and they will, there will be a growing demand for safer batteries. Nothing feeds demand like a free market.

Some seem to think better rules might be the answer. I dunno, but personally, I hope for improved batteries.
