Federal authorities are now investigating the plane crash on Cape Cod that left two people with life-threatening injuries Friday.

The National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB) is investigating the crash of the small 1980 Mooney M20J plane, the agency said in a tweet Saturday afternoon. The aircraft had only two occupants inside when it crashed Friday afternoon at the Falmouth Airpark on Airpark Drive off Fresh Pond Road.

The plane crashed short of Runway 25 near the Falmouth Airpark around 3:10 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA), which is helping with the NTSB-led investigation.

The two individuals inside the plane are being treated for life-threatening injuries, the Falmouth Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

Online flight records indicate the fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft left the Falmouth Airpark shortly after 11 a.m. Friday and landed at the Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport around 12 p.m. The plane then started to fly from Westfield to Falmouth shortly after 2:20 p.m. and crashed around 3 p.m.

Multiple emergency response agencies went to the crash scene to investigate. The department asked the public to stay away from the area while the crash remains under investigation.
