Jordan Moore didn’t know what he wanted to do with his career. He was bouncing around from opportunity to opportunity, before deciding to take his hobby, travel, and see if he could spin that into something. It led him to the airport, working with United in their tech ops as a utility technician. The job gave him exposure to aircraft and the mechanics, and he soon became fascinated.

He would ultimately decide to pursue the mechanic path.

“[I decided] I'm just going to go for it. I want to be a mechanic. I like working with my hands. I enjoy the people that I work with. I enjoy the company that I work for, so why not just continue in the direction I'm going with company that I'm already with and make a living out of it,” Moore recounted.

Moore is now part of United’s paid apprenticeship program Calibrate, working with the mechanics and gaining OJT hours.

“I'm learning on the job on their planes with their equipment and I basically do everything that they do,” he said. “Today for example, I got to do an engine change on an Airbus. Never in my life did I ever think I would be changing the engine to an Airbus.”

As an up-and-coming mechanic himself, Moore wishes more people would realize the opportunities the industry has to offer.

“I feel like young people need to look at the aviation industry, as the next big thing. Aviation will never go away, it will only get bigger. So I think that schools, and I think parents, I think teachers need to start pushing jobs in the aviation industry because I don't think they realize the potential that's here for these kids coming out of school. You know, you can have a great career and a fun career working in aviation,” he said.
