Flights in 1928 ‘Tin Goose’ Aircraft Available in Ohio

July 24, 2023

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The famed Tin Goose will be flying through the Northeast Ohio skies next month.

Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Co. designed and built the Ford Tri-Motor, which could reach up to 130 mph and would become the first regularly scheduled passenger airliner. One of the few surviving planes – also known as the “Tin Goose” – will be in the air Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 17-20.

The Ford Tri-Motor Tour, hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association, will offer ticketed flights in the historic plane at the Wayne County Airport.

The plane that will be in Northeast Ohio initially flew in 1928. Its flight time included soaring over the Grand Canyon in the 1930s and serving as an airliner in Honduras. In 2014, after a long period as a museum showpiece, Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton bought the plane and restored it to its flight status.

A Tri-Motor plane also visited Wayne County in 2015 and 2019.

Under the guidance of Wadsworth-based EAA chapter 846, rides will be offered on the Tri-Motor for 10 passengers at a time. Every seat has a window; passengers are encouraged to bring a camera.

Advance tickets are $95 ($65 for ages 17 and under). Book via flytheford.org or call 877-952-5395.

The airport is at 6020 Honeytown Road, Smithville.
