Airbus Starts Building Engines as It Develops Hydrogen Jet by 2035
Frankfurt — The world's largest aircraft manufacturer Airbus will for the first time manufacture engines as it pushes ahead with plans to build a hydrogen jet, company officials said on Wednesday.
The European aerospace corporation is developing a hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine that could be incorporated into the zero-emission aircraft that it plans to develop and put into operation by 2035.
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury had already publicly considered such a step at the beginning of the year and described it as a possible change of strategy.
To date, aircraft manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing have relied on engines from established suppliers, including Rolls-Royce, General Electric, Safran, Pratt & Whitney and MTU. These companies, in turn, often work together in different alliances for individual drive types.
