Lufthansa Returns A380 to Service With Flights Planned in Mid 2023

The move comes after the German airline had taken its A380 fleet out of service due to the pandemic, and had virtually ruled out using the aircraft for some time.

Frankfurt — Lufthansa is putting its Airbus A380 jets back into service as demand for tickets soars. The world's largest passenger aircraft is due to be back in the air from summer 2023, Lufthansa said on Monday.

The move comes after the German airline had taken its A380 fleet out of service due to the pandemic, and had virtually ruled out using the aircraft for some time. Lufthansa said Monday's announcement was also due to delays in the delivery of other kinds of aircraft.

Lufthansa still has 14 A380s, but has sold six of them already. The remaining eight aircraft are to remain in the fleet until further notice, although they are currently parked. It takes time to put them back into service and Lufthansa said it is still looking into how many of the jets will be deployed next year and which routes they will fly.

Monday's statement came after Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr suggested the company might return the A380 to service last week, even after he said in April that it would not be back. As Lufthansa renews its long-haul fleet, it is using Airbus A350s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the Boeing 777X. However, Boeing deliveries have been considerably delayed.
