German Car Supplier Aims to Buy Some of Airbus' Parts Production
Hamburg — German car supplier Muhr und Bender, also known as Mubea, is seeking to take over some of Airbus' loss-making parts production, the European aerospace company said on Tuesday. Airbus said the car parts company has submitted a "convincing offer" for the Augsburg and Varel sites in Germany and Brașov in Romania.
"The offer includes a comprehensive plan for long-term job security and enables the creation of a competitive German company," Airbus said.
The division in question currently employs just over 3,000 people, according to Airbus Germany chief André Walter.Selling the parts production, located at Airbus subsidiary Premium Aerotec, is part of Airbus' plans to restructure civilian aircraft production in Germany.
Meanwhile, after 18 hours of negotiations, Airbus and trade union IG Metall hammered out an agreement on measures to protect jobs and locations. The agreement includes an item to say that the sale cannot go ahead if IG Metall opposes it.
"In the coming weeks, employee representatives will examine Mubea's written offer regarding sites and employees," Airbus said in a statement. "The final decision on the sale will be taken together with employee representatives."
