Canada's largest airline is preparing to break ground on a new, state-of-the-art operations facility in Brampton.

Air Canada's Systems Operations Control Centre (SOC) will open in 2014 and essentially be the new "nerve centre" of the airline. Everything from scheduling crews, maintaining flight schedules and managing cargo will be done at this building, located at Ironbridge Road, near Mississauga Road and Steeles Avenue.

"At present, we have an office near the airport where most of this work is done but it was felt a new building was necessary because SOC's role has been evolving and it is taking on new functions," said Peter Fitzpatrick, company spokesperson. "It will be a very high-tech building and state-of-the-art." The company said not all of the project details have been finalized yet and therefore it is not ready to give up much information.

Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell revealed the news to local business leaders yesterday during her state of the city address.

She said the Air Canada facility will translate into 500 knowledge-based jobs in addition to millions of dollars in capital investment. "The successful attraction of this business means that Air Canada will be among the top 10 employers in Brampton, and a major contributor to the local and regional economy," said the mayor, adding that Air Canada should be making an official announcement sometime in April.
