Feb. 16, 2023

Kathmandu — A preliminary report into the Nepal plane crash on January 15, which resulted in deaths of all 72 people on board, revealed there was no power in the engines.

The report said when airport authorities gave the aircraft clearance for landing just before 11 am ( 1000 GMT), the pilot "mentioned twice that there was no power coming from the engines."

The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation published the report on its website on Wednesday. It is based on analysis of the flight data recorder and the voice data recorder.

The Yeti Airlines ATR-72 aircraft was just moments away from landing at a newly built airport when it fell into the gorge of the Seti River near the tourist city of Pokhara, about 200 kilometres north-west of Kathmandu.

The crash is one of the worst in the history of Nepal, a country with a poor aviation safety record.
