2 Dead After Small Plane Bound for Cuyahoga County Airport Crashes in New York, Reports Say
WHITE PLAINS, New York — Two people are dead after a small airplane bound for Cuyahoga County Airport crashed Thursday evening just north of New York City, shortly after taking off from JFK Airport, reports say.
WABC Channel 7 reports say rescuers found the single-engine Beechcraft A36 late Thursday night and that two bodies were located nearby. The identities of the victims have not been released.
The pilot contacted an air controller at Westchester County Airport at about 5:25 p.m. to report engine troubles, reports say. Contact with the plane, which was about a mile from the airport, was lost a short time later.
A search-and-rescue operation was conducted near the airport in White Plains, NBC New York reports. The plane was in an area surrounded by trees, WABC reports.
NBC New York reports the tail number for the plane links it to T&G Flying Club, which has locations at Cuyahoga County Airport and Burke Lakefront Airport.
Fox 5 reports the weather was not good at the time of the crash, with light rain and sleet and visibility of only about 1 mile.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, reports say.
Westchester County is located just northeast of New York City.
