Jun. 16—A pilot of a small plane died after crashing into a wooded area in Buckingham on Tuesday morning, according to authorities.
Arlene Salac, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman, said preliminary investigation showed a single-engine plane, a Vans RV-6A, crashed in a wooded area south of the Doylestown Airport about 10:30 a.m.
Buckingham police said the plane crashed in a wooded area near Cold Spring Creamery Road and Charter Club Drive. The pilot, the only occupant of the plane, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bucks County Coroner Meredith Buck identified the victim as Martin Sailer Jr., 79, of Upper Black Eddy. His cause of death had not been determined and an autopsy is scheduled for later in the week.
No structures or buildings were struck by the plane, according to police.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash.
The FAA is expected to release the aircraft tail number once investigators verify it at the scene, according to Salac.
Keith Holloway, a NTSB spokesman, said an investigator will be heading to the scene Wednesday to examine the plane and collect information.
The investigator, he said, will speak to any witnesses and collect weather information and radar data.
Holloway said investigators will not have a cause for the crash within the next few days. Investigations into crashes can take between 12 and 24 months, he said.
Buckingham police were assisted by Midway Fire Co., Doylestown Fire Co. and Plumsteadville Fire Co.
