Pilot Unhurt After Emergency Landing at Butte's Bert Mooney Airport
A small plane made an emergency landing at Bert Mooney Airport on Monday after experiencing landing-gear issues.
The pilot aboard the plane was unhurt after the Cessna 310 twine-engine plane made a rough landing at around noon.
Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester said he thought the plane was probably traveling 90 to 100 mph when it landed. He said it tipped a little as landing gear gave way. When a wingtip hit the runway, the plane spun, striking a runway marker, he said.
The aircraft had taken off from Bert Mooney at roughly 8:40 a.m., according to the flight track log on FlightAware.com.
First responders were called to the airport around 9 a.m. to prepare for an emergency landing of a small aircraft experiencing landing gear malfunction. The Butte Fire Department, as well as the Racetrack and Boulevard Volunteer Fire Departments, responded to the scene.
The plane circled Butte for more than two hours to burn off fuel before making the landing.
The plane is owned by Butte-based Angle of Attack Aeronautics, LLC, a local flying school, according to registry details from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The plane did not appear to sustain extensive damage.
Police and fire officials did not release the name of the pilot.
