Update: More details of the plane landing were provided by a spokesman for the Missouri Highway Patrol. That story is posted here.

A plane made an emergency landing in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 470 in Lee’s Summit Tuesday afternoon.

The plane was forced to land around 2 p.m. as a pilot was making the final approach to land at the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport and experienced “sudden engine failure in one of two engines,” according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Video footage provided by the Kansas City Scout traffic service showed the small aircraft stopped on the interstate past Douglas Street and near the N.E. Colbern Road exit. Lee’s Summit police responded to the area, which is about two miles southeast of the Lee’s Summit airport. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Vehicles were driving around the plane on the right shoulder as crews worked to clear the scene. The eastbound lanes of the interstate were re-opened by 3:50 p.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted and was responding to the scene to investigate, the highway patrol said.
