SAVANNAH, GA — The General Dynamics Aviation Services center in Westfield, MA, recently received the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 2008 Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Diamond Certificate of Excellence award. It is the eleventh consecutive year the facility has been honored with the distinction.

In addition, General Dynamics Aviation Services-Westfield employees earned one Diamond, 51 Ruby, 40 Gold, and 50 Silver awards for individuals. FAA representatives presented the awards during a ceremony on July 10 at the Westfield facility.

The AMT program was established in 1992 to recognize FAA-certified aviation mechanics and their employers for participating in supplemental aviation maintenance training and other continuing-education courses.

The Diamond Certificate is the higher of the FAA's two award levels for employers. It is awarded to organizations with 100-percent participation in the FAA's maintenance training program. Examples of approved training include FAA and industry training seminars and on-the-job technical training or college-level courses in mathematics, science, or management.

The Diamond Award is the highest of the FAA's five award levels for aviation technicians. Each level is based on the hours of qualifying aircraft maintenance training each member of the aviation maintenance workforce receives during the year. Requirements range from six hours of aviation industry maintenance training for the Bronze Award to completion of a college-level three-credit course in an applicable field and one of the following for a Diamond Award: a 10-day aviation maintenance course, 58 hours of maintenance training, or 15 hours of teaching maintenance training.

"These awards demonstrate our technicians’ commitment to our customers and their aircraft," says Mark Burns, president, General Dynamics Aviation Services. "The investment these technicians have made in terms of their time and effort enhances the service experience for our operators. We appreciate their initiative and the FAA's recognition. I am also delighted to see our Westfield facility recognized in this manner for the eleventh consecutive year."
