Recently many members of AAAE and ACI-NA received letters from certain airlines and aircraft manufacturers regarding concerns over particular runway deicing fluids (RDF) currently in use at many airports. The letters specifically cite a possible connection between RDFs containing formates/acetates and corrosion to brakes, connectors, and other aircraft components. To address these concerns, the airlines suggest that airports switch to less damaging RDFs, as early as this upcoming winter season.

In response, staff at both organizations are working within their respective committees to assess the situation and determine the necessary steps to addressing this issue cooperatively with all interested parties (e.g., airlines, aircraft manufacturers, brake manufacturers, fluid manufacturers, etc)

. Conversations with FAA revealed no indication of new safety concerns or forthcoming regulatory changes. They additionally noted that the possible concerns raised in the letters are long-known and have been undergoing attention through the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) G-12 Aircraft Ground Deicing Committee.

We are aware that most airports have purchased RDFs for the upcoming winter season, and we encourage you to continue with your plans. While new RDFs are under development, the associated costs, environmental impacts, and effectiveness are yet to be fully realized. Continuing to rely on RDFs that meet the required SAE and FAA specifications is the best course forward for the near-term.

We will keep you apprised of any developing information as we work toward possible solutions that address safety, operational, and environmental concerns.
