United lays off 45, adds some routes

United Airlines Inc. said Monday it is discontinuing its year- round service from Denver to Anchorage, switching to seasonal service and laying off 45 workers.

United will continue to operate its seasonal service to Anchorage with two flights from Chicago and one from San Francisco, said spokeswoman Megan McCarthy.

"This was a very difficult but necessary decision that was made after extensive analysis showed that it made good business sense to discontinue this service," McCarthy said.

United said last week it would reduce its domestic flights between some cities while developing or re-invigorating other markets to stave off competition.

From Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, United started last Thursday to provide daily round-trip service to Halifax, Canada. It also started last Saturday to offer twice weekly service to Kalispell, Mont., which will continue through Sept. 2.

From Denver, United started flying to Kalispell, Mont., and Maui, last week, while gearing up for Bakersfield, Calif., and Little Rock, Ark., on Sept. 5.

From Los Angeles, United will start service to Wichita, Kan., on Sept. 5.

From Washington Dulles Airport, United started Oklahoma City service Thursday and will start Little Rock, Ark., and Ottawa, Canada, on Sept. 5.

From San Francisco, it started service to Palmdale, Calif., Thursday.
