National Nuclear Security Administration Awards Cargo Handling Contract to Augusta Regional Airport

May 2, 2022

Apr. 28—The National Nuclear Security Administration is in the process of awarding two contracts to transport materials to the Savannah River Site.

It issued a notice Thursday that it intends to continue to use NAC International of Norcross, Ga. to deliver tritium producing burnable absorber rods to the Savannah River Site in secure casks.

The administration issued a notice last week that it plans to award an $802,243.82 contract to the Augusta Regional Airport to provide cargo loading and unloading services to support its work at the Savannah River Site.

NAC International was the only applicant to submit a certificate of compliance during the bidding process for the contract to transport the rods from the Tennessee Valley Authority's Watts Bar Nuclear Plant.

The information provided does not indicate how much the contract would be for.

NAC International was founded in 1968 as the Nuclear Assurance Corporation. It is a subsidiary of the Hitachi Zosen Corporation which designed Japan's first nuclear transportation cask in 1978.

Information provided with the contract award to Augusta Regional says the airport is the only airport that meets the administration's needs including proximity to the site (It is 23.4 miles from the airport to the badge office at SRS.), runway size (A Boeing 737-900 requires more than 6,800 feet to land.) and tower control.
