Saft To Supply Battery Systems For New Boeing 777 Jets

July 18, 2018
Saft battery systems are also available for retrofitting Boeing 777 airliner fleets through Boeing Global Services.

Paris, July 18, 2018. Saft won a contract with Boeing to equip all of its new 777 and 777-X aircraft with onboard rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery systems, consisting of Eversky TM ULM batteries combined with a dedicated charger. The new Saft battery system is designed to provide Boeing 777 operators with superior performance for lower operating costs through longer maintenance intervals. The existing 777 can also be equipped with these new systems through Boeing Global Services.

The 777 contract, which covers all new aircraft delivered as of the first quarter of 2019, is the first contract directly signed by Saft with Boeing as a leading supplier / integrator. For more than 30 years, Saft has been supplying Boeing batteries through integrators. Saft has also been a long-standing partner of Aviall, providing services for commercial aircraft fleets worldwide.

The Boeing 777's battery systems will provide the on-board power needed to start the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and the back-up power of critical systems. They include a ULV battery of 24 V and 60 (Ah), as well as a charger. Each aircraft is equipped with two battery systems.

Saft ULM batteries for aviation have already proven themselves to major aircraft and helicopter manufacturers. They provide Boeing with the ideal solution to achieve significant cost savings in commercial aircraft operating costs, combining high performance, low weight, long service life and low maintenance requirements. Other advantages related to the design of ULM batteries, the replacement of spare parts is facilitated and the batteries can be stored for long periods - up to 10 years - without loss of performance.
