Riga Airport Passenger Figures Reach Almost Half of the Pre-crisis Level in August

With the increase in vaccination coverage and travel opportunities, the number of flights and passengers handled at Riga Airport continues to grow. This August, it exceeded 390,000 passengers, which is almost half of the indicators of August 2019.

Operational data on airport performance show that the number of passengers served at Riga Airport this August exceeded 390,000, which is almost half of the numbers of August 2019 and 92,000 passengers more than a month before. Compared to August 2019, the number of passengers has dropped by 53%.

In annual breakdown, the number of passengers in the first eight months of this year has dropped by 79% as compared to 2019, and by 36% as compared to 2020.

The number of flights serviced in August was 42% lower than in August 2019: 4,878 flights were handled last month, of which 3,772 were operated by scheduled passenger carriers.

The cargo segment shows development and growth. Compared to August 2019, the number of cargo flights handled this August has increased by 39%; in total, the number of cargo flights serviced in the first eight months of this year has almost doubled (by 47%) as compared to the corresponding period of 2019. Compared to the first eight months of 2019, the volume of cargo carried on cargo flights has also increased by 52%.

The majority or 60% of passengers in August were carried by the national airline airBaltic, 18% – by the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair and 7% – by Wizz Air. Of the 87 destinations offered by Riga Airport in August, London, Tallinn and Kiev were the most popular travel destinations.
