Frankfurt — Frankfurt Airport reported an increase in passenger traffic in June despite the strain of staffing shortages.
A higher number of holidaymakers saw the German transport hub count some 5 million passengers, around 400,000 more than in May, operator Fraport reported Wednesday.
The figures mark the highest number of monthly passengers since the coronavirus pandemic began for Germany's biggest airport.
The number of passengers was 181% higher than a year earlier, but around 24% lower than June 2019, before the pandemic.
Airports and airlines are currently struggling with a lack off staff after the branch cut huge numbers of employees during the coronavirus crisis when air travel largely stopped.
In its cargo business the airport meanwhile posted a decline. In June, the airport handled over 163,900 tons of cargo and airmail - a drop of around 12% compared to a year earlier.
