China Redirects Beijing--Bound Flights as Imported Coronavirus Spikes
Beijing (dpa) - All international passengers to Beijing will be redirected to 12 designated entry points throughout China starting Monday, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced in an online notice on Sunday.
The announcement came on the same day that Chinese health authorities reported 45 news imported cases of coronavirus, the sharpest spike in cases arriving from abroad yet. Only one new infection was locally transmitted.
Beijing is among the top destinations for imported cases of the new coronavirus, reporting 13 new cases on Sunday.
Beijing-bound passengers will instead arrive at Shanghai Pudong, Nanjing, Tianjin, Dalian, Qingdao, Xi'an, Shenyang, Zhengzhou, Taiyuan, Hohhot, and Shijiazhuang airports.
After clearing immigration, those who meet the quarantine conditions will then be permitted to board onward flights to the Chinese capital, the CAAC notice said.
On Sunday the National Health Commission also reported that 504 patients who tested positive for Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, were discharged from hospital during the previous 24 hours, bringing the tally of recovered patients to 72,244.
Across mainland China, there remain 5,549 ongoing cases of Covid-19. Since the respiratory illness began spreading in December, 81,054 people have been infected nationwide, 3,261 of whom have died.
