Amsterdam — Dutch airline KLM is introducing extra coronavirus protection measures on its flights from China.

The crew will be provided with FFP2 masks and safety glasses, KLM announced in Amsterdam on Wednesday, according to a report by the news agency ANP.

Service on board the aircraft will also be changed, according to the airline, so that direct contact with passengers will be shortened. The crew would also be able to use a toilet reserved only for them, it added.

Trade unions had previously expressed great concern about the safety of KLM employees because of the strong wave of coronavirus infections prevailing in China.

In the Netherlands, there have been no mandatory tests for travellers from China so far. However, at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, passengers are provided with a free self-test.

KLM currently flies three times a week to and from China. At the end of the month, this is to be increased to six flights per week. On the flights from China, masks were already compulsory for passengers and crew.
