The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today voted to approve the operating agreements for Cathay Pacific, Aero Mexico and El Al. All three airlines are set to begin service at Logan this spring; the earliest is Cathay Pacific whose inaugural flight is on May 2nd. All three airlines will operate out of Terminal E.
“With a steady growth in the education and healthcare sectors, it is no wonder that airlines are looking at Boston as a smart business decision,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “International flights have been the largest growing sector at Logan, with one in five passengers traveling abroad. We are making a continued effort to improve infrastructure at the airport that helps grow the region’s economy, improve our customers’ experience, and be a good neighbor.’’
Cathay Pacific will fly
- from Hong Kong International Airport to Boston Logan
- using a Boeing 777-300ER (275 seats)
- beginning on May 2nd
Aero Mexico will fly
- from Mexico City’s Benito Juarez Int’l Airport to Boston Logan
- using a Boeing 737-700 (124 seats)
- beginning on June 1st
El Al will fly
- from Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport to Boston Logan
- using a Boeing 767-300 (228 seats)
- beginning on June 28th
The agreements state that before a new airline can operate out of Logan, the airline must, “have valid and current certifications and authorizations from all state, federal and other governmental regulatory bodies for the aircraft used and the aircraft operation conducted.”
In addition to the three airlines, Hainan Airlines will begin service to Shanghai on June 20th. As an existing airline at Logan with a non-stop flight to Beijing, Massport did not require a new agreement.
The Massachusetts Port Authority Board is a seven-member group that oversees Massport, a financially independent authority which owns and operates Boston Logan International Airport, the public container and cruise terminals in the Port of Boston, Hanscom Field, Worcester Regional Airport as well as real estate holdings and public parks in South Boston and East Boston. Board members are not paid for their service.
Boston Logan, a short distance from the intersection of Route 128 and I-90 and five minutes from downtown Boston, serves as the gateway to the New England region and offers nonstop service to 76 domestic and 44 international destinations and in 2014 handled 31.6 million passengers.
