Global aircraft systems integrator Armstrong Aerospace has launched its new PowerBar™ off-seat power solution, providing at-seat Portable Electronic Device (PED) power without requiring modification or recertification of existing seats.
The company secured an initial STC for the installation of PowerBar™ on Boeing 747-400 aircraft. A major airline is already installing the new PowerBar™ on its B747-400 fleet for its passengers’ benefit.
Rob Abbinante, Armstrong Aerospace’s CEO said, “Our PowerBar™ PED power solution doesn’t affect the certification of existing seats – and it’s a quick and easy retrofit to install. Flat batteries will be a thing of the past for travellers.”
90% of all US travelers bring PEDs on-board aircraft. But, with average laptop battery life less than 2 hours and a 33% decrease in battery life when Wi-Fi is enabled, power management when airborne can become very difficult.
The Armstrong Aerospace PowerBar™ and PowerBox™ product families are Airbus and Boeing compatible, and install directly to the seat tracks with no contact with the seat leg. This design makes installation and certification simple, since there are no conflicts with the dynamic deformations/deflections of the seats.
PowerBar™ and PowerBox™ present a clean, integrated appearance with a low profile. Installation can take place quickly; usually in one shift.
Armstrong Aerospace plans to secure a further STC for the Boeing 777 and then move on to the leading narrow-body aircraft from Boeing and Airbus.
