Aug. 15—A Southwest Airlines flight en route to Hawaii was forced to make an abrupt landing back at Oakland International Airport after the plane experienced a "mechanical issue," according to the airline.

Southwest flight 1281 departed Oakland International Airport Monday morning toward Maui's Kahului Airport but returned to Oakland because of a "mechanical issue requiring review" before it crossed the ocean, according to Southwest.

The aircraft landed uneventfully and taxied to the gate, and the flight was swapped to a different aircraft for the continuation of the trip, the airline said.

Southwest representatives would not elaborate on the particular mechanical issue that needed review.

Oakland International Airport representatives said they could not comment on whether the aircraft change led to more delays within the airport.
