Oct. 22, 2020

The Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC) welcomes the Puerto Rico Ports Authority as a new member of the association.

The Puerto Rico Ports Authority is one of the main government agencies in Puerto Rico and is responsible for managing the main ports of entry and exit for passengers in Puerto Rico, as well as nine airports in the country, such as the Rafael Hernández de Aguadilla Airport and the Mercedita Airport in Ponce.

"ACI-LAC warmly welcomes the Puerto Rico Ports Authority as a new member of the organization. We are particularly proud that the authority has decided to join the world airports association, since with its nine airports it fulfills an important task socially and economically for the benefit of all Puerto Ricans. We encourage the authority to actively participate in the definition of international airport policies and take a leadership position among the airports of the Caribbean," highlighted Rafael Echevarne, General Director of ACI-LAC.

"SARS-CoV-2, commonly known as COVID-19, demands more commitment from all members of society. APPR, as the entity in charge of air operations on the island, aspires to fully comply with the guidelines of the Airport Health Accreditation Program (AHA) of the Airports Council International (ACI for its acronym in English). Compliance with the ACI AHA accreditation program represents and ensures a healthier and more reliable service for our airport facilities, for the benefit of both the domestic and international traveling public," highlighted the Executive Director of the APPR, Joel A. Pizá Batiz.

"Among the airports that APPR owns and manages are the facilities of the Mercedita International Airport (PSE) of Ponce, located in the southern region of the island, and the Rafael Hernández International Airport (BQN) of Aguadilla, located in the western region of the island. As both have C-139 Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), they operate in accordance with strict state and federal rules and regulations. Currently both airports are also governed by a strict screening and monitoring protocol for COVID-19. Complying with the ACI AHA accreditation standards gives passengers additional assurance that we are complying with the highest standards in the industry," said the Manager of the APPR Aviation Bureau, José A. Riollano.
