Germany: Handing Over the Keys at BER: Maintenance Hangar Goes into Operation

The hangar covers an area the size of nearly two and a half football pitches and provides space for at least six Airbus A319/A320 or Boeing B737 aircraft, or alternatively two long-haul A330 aircraft.

On Monday, at Berlin's new Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport, the largest new infrastructure in the engineering area, namely the maintenance hangar for airberlin technik and Germania Technik Brandenburg, went into operation. Berlin's Senator for Economic Affairs, Sybille von Obernitz and the CEO of Berlin Airports, Dr. Rainer Schwarz, attended the ceremony to watch the investor from Heidelberg, Jurgen B. Harder, hand over a symbolic key to the future tenants airberlin technik and Germania Technik Branderburg, represented by the CEO of airberlin, Harmut Mehdorn, and the Managing Director of Germania, Andreas Wobig.

Since laying the foundation stone on 21st March 2011, it has taken 13 months of construction to bring the huge project to a successful conclusion. The hangar covers an area the size of nearly two and a half football pitches and provides space for at least six Airbus A319/A320 or Boeing B737 aircraft, or alternatively two long-haul A330 aircraft. 70% of the maintenance area will be used by airberlin technik, 30% by Germania Technik Brandenburg. In addition to the maintenance area, there are another 5,000 square metres of office, storage and workshop space, which will also be rented out to the two aviation maintenance companies. As the market leader in Berlin we are looking forward to the new airport, which will enable us to offer our customers an even better service and to further develop our market position, said Hartmut Mehdorn, CEO airberlin. Our commitment to BER is also reflected in the area of maintenance. From June 2012 the maintenance capacity of airberlin technik in Berlin will be doubled. The maintenance of our aircraft takes top priority with us and the new hangar will give us the perfect environment for this. In the new state-of-the-art building it will be possible to undertake a wide range of maintenance tasks which previously had to be sent to other locations. The new maintenance hangar shows a clear commitment to Berlin and is the hub of our subsidiary Germania Technik Brandenburg. We are delighted to have access to this outstanding infrastructure for the maintenance and repair of our aircraft and to be able to realise important synergies with airberlin, said Andreas Wobig, CEO Germania. As an entrepreneur, I am interested in a long-term, solid economic environment, said Jurgen B. Harder of Harder & Partner. The new BER Airport offers optimal conditions to promote economic exchange; this was a decisive factor in our decision in favour of investing with these partners. We would like to wish the airlines every success.
