Berlin, 21 May 2014: The Advisory Board of Bauhaus Luftfahrt has welcomed a new member. In a meeting held today at ILA Berlin Air Show, Dr Rainer Martens, Chief Operating Officer of MTU Aero Engines, for the first time represented his company in the steering committee of the Munich-based interdisciplinary research institution. In this position he succeeds Dr Erich Steinhardt, MTU’s recently retired Head of Technology and Advanced Products, who acted as representative for the engine manufacturer for more than eight years.

With Dr Martens, who has been appointed for the duration of five years, another high-ranking leader of the German aerospace industry opted to strengthen the Advisory Board of Bauhaus Luftfahrt. Dr Martens has been a member of the MTU Board of Management since April 2006. Prior to this appointment he was production manager at the Airbus plant in Bremen, after spending five years as the head of MTU’s manufacturing centre for turbine blades. Including previous stations of his career, the holder of a doctorate in mechanical engineering looks back on over 20 years of experience in the aviation industry.

“On behalf of the entire Advisory Board, I would like to thank Dr Erich Steinhardt for his longtime dedication to our committee and his extraordinary achievements for aviation in Bavaria and also for Bauhaus Luftfahrt, an institution that he accompanied since its very beginning,” states Dr Detlef Müller-Wiesner, Chairman of the Advisory Board. “For his retirement, we wish Dr Steinhardt all the best and we are looking forward to working with his successor.”

The Advisory Board of Bauhaus Luftfahrt consists of five representatives. The charter members Airbus Group, Liebherr-Aerospace, MTU Aero Engines as well as the Free State of Bavaria each delegate one representative. Additional representatives are elected from the ranks of all other sustaining members, actually IABG, by the general meeting of members. Similar to a company’s Supervisory Board, Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s Advisory Board acts as a controlling and consulting body for its Executive Directors.

About Bauhaus Luftfahrt:

Bauhaus Luftfahrt is an interdisciplinary research institution funded by the four aerospace companies Airbus Group, Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft (IABG), Liebherr-Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines as well as grants of the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy and Technology. The non-profit association is an internationally-oriented think tank. The team of around 50 employees deals with the future of mobility in general and with the future of air travel in particular. The goal of the research work is to consider the complex system of aviation from different points of view. In every project, the technical, economic, social and ecological aspects are considered holistically.
