SFO Announces Parking Garage Changes to Improve Roadway Traffic Flow

June 25, 2018

The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced a series of enhancements in airport parking garages to improve roadway traffic flow around the terminals.  Effective June 25, SFO will open a new passenger loading area in the Domestic Parking Garage for limousines and Transportation Network Companies such as Lyft, Uber and Wingz.  SFO will also make the hourly parking garages free for stays of 30 minutes or less, providing a free alternative to the terminal curb for dropping off or meeting passengers.

“We’re focused on improving access for travelers at SFO,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero.  “With these enhancements, we’re providing new options for our customers to ensure that they can be dropped off and picked up quickly and efficiently.”

With passenger volumes at record highs, SFO has been working with Uber and Lyft to improve operations at the terminal curbs.  Coinciding with the opening of the new loading area, Uber will relocate Uber Pool and Express Pool pick-ups in the domestic terminals to the garage starting June 25.  Uber Pool and Express Pool passengers can take the pedestrian bridges from Terminals 1, 2, and 3 directly to the loading area on the top floor of the Domestic Parking Garage.  Lyft will launch a similar program in July, but in the interim it will relocate pick-ups to the garage during peak periods starting June 25.

SFO also encourages customers to use alternative pick-up and drop-off locations to avoid traffic congestion getting to the terminals.  During peak departure times, electronic signs will direct customers to use the lower level to drop off passengers.  And effective June 25th, the hourly parking garages will be free for stays of 30 minutes or less, allowing customers to bypass the terminal curbs completely when dropping off or picking up passengers.  This applies to the Domestic Parking Garage and International Garages A and G.  Vehicles that enter and exit the garages within 30 minutes will not be charged. Vehicles parked in the garages for longer than 30 minutes will be charged for the full duration of their stay.
