The Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY) Authority Board has taken an important step to further advance the construction of a new, permanent general aviation U.S. Customs and Border Protection Facility at the airport and affirm GYY’s position as the premier mid-sized airport in northwest Indiana and the Chicago metropolitan region.
The airport authority had previously approved the engagement of Lee Companies of Gary, Indiana to manage the construction of a new customs facility at GYY. Lee has begun the procurement process to receive competitive quotes on critical parts of the project, and yesterday, the authority approved an agreement with Maris and Son, Inc. of Hobart, Indiana to install a new roof on the facility. Maris and Son has also committed to engaging a Gary subcontractor and local residents to perform work on the roof.
“Completing construction of the new customs facility is a top priority of the Airport Authority Board in 2018 and we are thrilled to approve this first construction package to a local, northwest Indiana company,” said GYY Airport Authority Board Chairman Stephen Mays.
Seven or eight total construction packages are expected to be bid out over the next few months to complete construction of the new facility, which is anticipated to open the first half of 2018.
The airport authority also renewed agreements with Whittaker & Company, PLLC of Gary, Indiana for fiscal year 2017 auditing services and NGC Corp to continue serving as the airport’s lead engineering consultant.
