Hagerstown Aviation Career Fair Attracts More Employers Than Available Students

Nov. 6, 2017
A Career Fair in Hagerstown this week illustrates the trend in that there are more registered employers searching for qualified aviation technicians than there are available graduates, so much so that PIA is bringing in 19 more soon-to-be graduates

Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) Hagerstown ~ has announced plans for an aeronautics career fair on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What’s notable is that the event continues to attract considerably more employers than available students for hire, a strong indicator of career trends for the diverse aviation maintenance industry.

'That we will host more employers than we have students attending on November 8 is as strong an indicator of career demand as we could possibly imagine and helps us connect employers with the entry-level mechanic skills they are looking for,” said Butch Adams, Hagerstowvn Campus Director. "The region has a strong history in aviation, and PIA continues to play a large part in its sustained viability."

Boeing's 2016 Current Market Outlook forecasts that between now and 2035, the aviation industry will need to supply more than two million new aviation personnel— specifically, 679,000 maintenance technicians.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics cites that the 2016 median annual pay for aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians was $60,270.

According to Hagerstown Campus Career Services officials, employers are seeking A&P mechanics, mechanical skills, strong soft skills, leadership qualities and dependability - all skills required to grow and advance within a company.

Since 2011, Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics' Hagerstown Branch campus has been training certified and work-ready aviation maintenance technicians in high demand with. a 16-month diploma program in Aviation Maintenance Technology. Working in conjunction with the Hagerstown Airport Authority and by request of the Governor's Workforce Investment Board, PIA instituted the aviation maintenance technician school to help serve the workforce needs of both Maryland and the rest of the nation.
