SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 19, 2017) – If you’re flying out of Terminal B at the San Antonio International Airport (SAT) next week, you might want to look up. There will be a 1918 biplane above you. The aircraft is on loan from the Witte Museum. This is part of a collaboration between SAT and the Witte to highlight San Antonio’s place in aviation history. It brings the Curtiss JN-4D biplane also known as the “Jenny” to the airport.  The Jenny was used as a military trainer for pilots in the U.S. Air Service during World War I and as a mail-carrying airplane during the 1920s.  Our Stinson Municipal Airport’s namesake Katherine Stinson also flew the same type of plane for fundraising tours for the American Red Cross during World War I.

“San Antonio is known for its rich history in aviation innovation and the military, so this partnership is meaningful to the community,” stated Russ Handy, Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio.  “We are elated to have the “Jenny” in the airport and very appreciative of the Witte for agreeing to allow us to share it with our customers!”

The Jenny will be fully installed on October 23 and SAT and the Witte will host a press conference on October 24.
