Lufthansa Group Airlines Expands Network Services in the United States

Sept. 28, 2017

There is now great news for travelers in the New York and Miami areas that are interested to fly directly to Berlin or Düsseldorf, respectively. For the first time, since 2001, Lufthansa will be stationing a long-haul aircraft in Berlin, thus connecting Germany’s capital and Europe’s most vibrant city with the Big Apple. Flights on this nonstop route will commence on November, 8 2017. Lufthansa will offer the service five times a week – every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday – using an Airbus A330-300. With this new flight, the Lufthansa Group will offer direct flights from the New York area to four destinations in Germany — Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and Berlin.

Also in the upcoming winter 2017/18 timetable, which begins on Oct. 28, long-haul flights from Miami to Düsseldorf, Germany, will resume. The MIA – DUS flight will also commence on Nov. 8, being offered three times per week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The route will operate with an Airbus A330-300

“The addition of the JFK – Berlin route and the Miami – Düsseldorf route continues to display Lufthansa’s strong commitment to servicing the United States of America,” said Tamur Goudarzi Pour, Lufthansa group vice president airline sales for the Americas. “Furthermore, passengers traveling on these newly introduced flights will be able to experience the quality service and premium products that Lufthansa is proud to offer.”

The TXL - JFK route connects two of the most lively tourist hotspots, globally. Berlin is a dynamic city with strong historic roots and cultural diversity. Passengers flying there can expect to encounter a thriving art scene, as well as many modern and historic landmarks. Düsseldorf is home to a flourishing fashion landscape and known for its booming commercial areas.

Eurowings, the point-to-point leisure arm of Lufthansa, is also expanding its long-haul air travel product in the coming winter schedule, adding further service from both Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf airports. In addition to the six Airbus A330s that are already stationed at Cologne/Bonn, Eurowings will place a seventh aircraft into long-haul service beginning Nov. 8, which will initially operate flights from Düsseldorf to Caribbean destinations.

Eurowings plans to further accelerate the growth of its long-haul operations in the 2018 summer timetable period, increasing its capacity to a ten-aircraft fleet. The expansion will give the budget airline a particularly strong presence in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, from which it will serve destinations worldwide with at least seven long-haul aircraft. The areas served will include popular destinations in the USA, but also the Caribbean and the Far East. Lufthansa’s new Berlin-New York and Düsseldorf-Miami routes will also be transferred to Eurowings in summer 2018, adding Berlin’s Tegel Airport to Eurowings’ long-haul operations.

Eurowings will also extend its budget long-haul product to Munich next year. Three Airbus A330s will be stationed at Munich Airport to operate these services from the end of March 2018 onwards.

The new flights being introduced in the winter 2017/18 timetable add to Lufthansa Group’s already existing 431 frequencies to 25 destinations in North America. Lufthansa Group carriers that fly to North America include Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Edelweiss. The Group’s carrier hubs now comprise: FRA, MUC, ZRH, VIE, BRU, CGN, DUS and TXL.
