United Airlines Now Offers Two Daily Flights Between Indy, San Francisco

Aug. 15, 2017

A determined effort to secure a daily flight from the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) to San Francisco four years ago proves to be a growing success today, as United Airlines launched its inaugural second daily flight this morning to the famed Bay Area city.

United Airlines has increased its service to San Francisco with a second daily flight, allowing travelers a 6 a.m. departure and a late morning return at 11 a.m. Travelers also have the option of a second flight returning to Indy at 6:35 p.m. daily.

“This second daily service is a big win, particularly for our business travelers,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority. “It further supports the connection between the Indianapolis and Silicon Valley tech communities, and opens the door for more people to travel to the West Coast daily out of Indy for both business and leisure.”
Over the past year, Indy airport airlines have invested in new routes and additional flights between Indianapolis and the Western United States.

Alaska Airlines, the newest airline to setup operations in Indianapolis, launched its inaugural flight to Seattle-Tacoma in May, and plans to launch its own nonstop daily flight to San Francisco Sept. 26.

Additionally, Allegiant launched an inaugural, twice-daily nonstop flight to Austin, Texas, in May and will launch a twice-daily nonstop flight to Phoenix-Mesa in November. Southwest Airlines launched its inaugural nonstop seasonal flight to San Diego in June. That flight runs through August, and represents the only existing flight out of the Indy airport directly into southern California. Frontier also launched a nonstop flight to Las Vegas in July that leaves out of Indianapolis three times per week.

The United flights from Indy to San Francisco help provide a critical pathway to Asian markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Sydney, Taipei, Haneda, Chengdu, Xian and Hangzhou, as well as Tokyo and Seoul. The additional flight will help increase the efficient connectivity to Asia, cutting five hours off the current connection time.

“We are proud to bring our customers more opportunities to connect to the world,” said Jake Cefolia, United’s vice president of sales. “This second daily flight to San Francisco gives customers more options to connect to destinations across the Western United States and beyond including Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong and China.”
