Birmingham, AL -- August 1, 2017 --Imagine aviation greats such as Orville and Wilbur Wright, Amelia Earhart, Bessie Coleman, and Eugene Bullard as children before completing their aviation achievements. With the help of Lewis Communications the 2017-2018 Southern Museum of Flight Young Aviator's Calendar does just that. Young children, as young as two-years old, along with their families are raising money for the Southern Museum of Flight's Mary Alice Beatty scholarship for women pursuing careers in aviation and aerospace in Alabama as they portray early aviation legends. The calendar will be revealed at the Southern Museum of Flight's Young Aviator's Bombshell Celebration, Saturday, August 5 from 5-8 PM. Tickets to the event are $30 and calendars are $20 each and are purchased online at southernmuseumofflight.org.

All are welcome to attend the family-friendly event and purchase a calendar as we honor the families who made the scholarship possible. Event participants include Birmingham Pinups Kappa Epsilon Psi Military Sorority, Greg's Hot Dogs, Steel City Pop, Magic City Face Art, and DJ Charles Pharo. Generous sponsors include Lewis Communications, Atlantic Aviation, Wayne Novy and Mary Alice Beatty Carmichael.

The museum empowers women in aviation with the Mary Alice Beatty scholarship, an annual $5,000 scholarship for young women ages 19-30 pursuing careers in aviation. The scholarship will be awarded in 2018. Named for the museum's creator, Mary Alice Beatty, who began the museum's collection in 1966 at Samford University with her personal aviation artifacts. She and her husband Donald Beatty were the first aviation couple to fly over the Andes and create courses and bases in Central and South America in the 1930's, detailed in her autobiography, "To Love the Sky." Her daughter Mary Alice Beatty Carmichael supports her family's aviation legacy through the scholarship. All interested scholarship applicants may apply through Women in Aviation International at WAI.org.

The museum is located in East Lake, two blocks from the Birmingham International Airport, at 4343 73rd Street North, 35206.
